One in, one out at Southend United?

IT COULD be a case of one in and one out for Southend United as Paul Sturrock looks to reshape his squad for the remainder of the season.

The Echo understands that the Blues boss is keen to strengthen his striking options by bringing in a young forward on loan from a Championship club.

And out-of-favour winger David Martin could be set to depart as Conference National club Luton Town are keen on taking him to Kenilworth Road.

“Blues may already have brought in Marc Laird and Michael Spillane during the transfer window, but they are keen to make more signings,” said a source close to the club.

“They remain keen on a striker and have identified a player they’re keen to sign who is currently playing for a club in the Championship.

“But in an ideal scenario they need players to depart as well.

“Luton have expressed an interest in David Martin, but it remains to be seen whether or not he agrees to the move or can agree terms.”

Martin, who is believed to be one of the highest earners at Blues, has been unable to secure a regular starting slot at Roots Hall after signing from Derby County in January 2012.

The 27-year-old has made 25 starts and 10 substitute appearances during that time – scoring four goals in the process.

However, he has started just two of Southend’s last 12 games and does not look likely to be offered a new deal when his current contract expires at the end of the season.

The former Millwall man must therefore decide whether or not to fight for his future at Roots Hall or drop in to non-league to sign for the Hatters, who are currently eighth in the Conference.

I've always thought he's a half decent player but sometimes with a manager your face doesn't fit so best to move on and join a club who want you to play week in and week out.

Not great for Martin. In a year from Championship to Non-League.

If only another Martin could leave the club...
