SOUTHEND United striker Neil Harris has decided to retire after failing to recover from the knee injury he suffered last season.

The 35-year-old still had 12 months to run on his contract at Roots Hall.

But he has now opted to hang up his boots.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Southend United and realised a boyhood dream by playing for the club I used to watch from the North Bank, “said Harris.

“I enjoyed every minute of my time at Roots Hall but unfortunately due to the injury I have to end what has been a very enjoyable career.

“I am now looking ahead to the future and the rest of my life.”

Harris scored 10 goals in 52 games across two seasons with the Shrimpers but is best remembered for his time with Millwall.

He remains the Lions' record ever goalscorer after hitting the back of the net for them 138 times.
