MICHAEL Timlin will today resume training with Southend United after being released from prison.

The 28-year-old midfielder has spent the last 42 days behind bars after supplying false details to police to avoid speeding fines.

But he will be back at the Boots & Laces training ground this afternoon and Blues boss Phil Brown feels the former Swindon Town man is also close to signing a new deal.

“It will be good to have Michael back in the camp again and contract talks with him are already a long way down the line,” said Brown.

“He’s out of contract at the moment and signing him up again would give us a real boost because he brings creativity and real energy to the team, and we do need more options in the midfield.

“We will need to see what kind of shape he’s in but we’d like him to come to Madrid when we head out there next week and then hopefully he’ll be able to start playing in some of the matches we have coming up.”

Timlin has not played since breaking his leg in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Leyton Orient last February but was due to resume running just before he went to prison.

His fitness levels will be checked by Blues’ medical stuff and Brown is certain the midfielder will be eager to get back to work.

“I would imagine Michael will be desperate to get back in and start training and playing again,” said Brown.

“He hasn’t been available for selection since I came in to the club but I’ve seen him play before and he’s someone who plays the game in the right way, with a smile on his face.

“He’s an important player for us and he will want to crack on and show what he can do again.”

Timlin joined Blues on a permanent basis in August 2011 having previously been on loan at Roots Hall.

The midfielder has made 90 appearances for the club and scored five goals.
