ADAM Barrett’s possible return to Southend United is today hanging in the balance.

Echosport understands that the popular defender held transfer talks with Blues boss Phil Brown yesterday.

They were spotted in discussions at the Roslin Hotel.

However, Brown has since poured cold water on Barrett coming back to Roots Hall describing it as “media speculation.”

Brown revealed earlier this week how he was keen to meet with the experienced defender who has just ended a five month loan spell at AFC Wimbledon.

But it remains to be seen whether or not a deal can be agreed.

The Benfleet based Barrett, who grew up supporting the Shrimpers, made 289 appearances during a six year spell with the club earlier on in his career.

The successful spell included back to back promotions as Blues worked their way in to the Championship before he left Roots Hall due to the club’s financial problems in the summer of 2010.

Blues are currently short of defenders with Cian Bolger and Luke Prosser both currently suspended while Mads Ibenfeldt is sidelined with a broken foot.
