SOUTHEND United's on loan striker Joe Pigott felt the Shrimpers' first half showing against Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night was the best since he arrived at Roots Hall.

Pigott scored twice in the opening 45 minutes to help Blues secure a 2-0 victory against the Robins.

And the on loan Charlton Athletic youngster was delighted by the display.

“The first half was the best half of football I think we've played since I've been here,” said the 21-year-old, who has now scored four goals in six games for Blues.

“t was a great game for us and for me personally it felt really good to get my first goals at Roots Hall.”

Pigott fired the Shrimpers in front after just nine minutes before doubling his tally with a well taken header.

And he was thrilled to see both efforts hit the back of the North Bank net.

“Their keeper toed out Jake Cassidy's header to me for me the first one and I shanked it a bit but thankfully it went in,” said Pigott.

“If I had hit it a bit cleaner then the keeper would probably have saved it.

“But the second one I was pleased with as well because heading is definitely something I try and work on.”

Pigott will now be looking to continue his good form when Accrington Stanley visit Roots Hall on Saturday.

And the striker insists his confidence could not be any higher.

“Things are going well and I'm getting chances in every game I play,” said Pigott.

“Even at Shrewsbury at the weekend I had two or three chances to score and if that keeps on happing then I'm sure I'll get more goals.

“It would be great more on Saturday too because it's another important game and we need to be getting the points in our home games.”
