SOUTHEND United left-back Ben Coker is still relieved the Shrimpers will be lining up in League One next season.

Coker saw his penalty saved by Wycombe Wanderers goalkeeper Alex Lynch during a dramatic shoot-out Blues eventually won 7-6 at Wembley.

But Coker initially feared his spot-kick was to condemn Phil Brown’s side to another season in League Two.

“I really thought we weren’t going up and it was all going to be my fault,” said the 24-year-old.

“It was a horrible moment but thankfully Dan (Bentley) was able to pull off a couple of great saves for us to win the game and it was just an unbelievable feeling.

“It’s impossible to put into words but of course I was very relieved and it’s the best feeling I’ve ever had on a football pitch.”

“It was just crazy and it only feels real when you watch back on the television.”

Blues had seemed set to lose the game in extra time when a Joe Jacobson’s free-kick fortuitously deflected in off Bentley.

And, with just 20 seconds remaining, Coker revealed he was starting to well up on the pitch.

“I couldn’t see us scoring and I could feel myself beginning to cry because I thought we had mucked it up,” said the defender.

“We were pretty much dead on our feet and we weren’t really creating anything in extra time.

“But then we got a goal with just seconds to go which was amazing and then to go on and win it in extra time like we did was just incredible.”

Blues will now be looking to build on the success in League One next season.

And Coker is confident the side can cope with the step up in standard.

“We have some very good players in our team and I’m confident we can go on and do really well in League One as well now,” he added.
