ADAM Thompson is close to signing a new contract at Southend United.

The centre-back, who is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, has been in discussions about a new deal for the past three months.

But Shrimpers boss Phil Brown has confirmed the situation is now close to being sorted.

“Everything is close to being sorted now with Adam and that’s good news for us all,” said Brown.

“He’s still working his way back from the injury but hopefully we will be able to announce the contract being done later this week.”

Thompson met with chairman Ron Martin for talks yesterday but the length of the deal being signed is not yet known.

The 22-year-old was initially offered a five month deal but was keen to sign a longer contract.

Thompson joined the Shrimpers in August 2013 and has made 48 appearances for the club.
