SOUTHEND United winger Stephen McLaughlin has returned to training.

The Irishman had missed the Shrimpers’ last three matches with an illness.

But the 25-year-old could now be back in contention for Saturday’s clash at Burton Albion.

“Stephen had a really bad virus and he couldn’t really breathe at times,” said Brown.

“It was really difficult for him to get out and about but he’s now been cleared by the doctors and everyone else that needs to clear him.

“He trained yesterday and he will be putting his hat in the ring for Saturday.

“It might be a bit too early for him but we will see how he trains for the rest of the week.”

McLaughlin ended last season on loan with Southend before returning on a permanent basis from Nottingham Forest in late August.

He has made three substitute appearances so far this season.
