JOE Pigott bagged his fifth goal in four games to fire Southend United to a 1-0 win against Port Vale and then revealed he is determined to keep on proving people wrong.

Pigott received stick from sections of the Shrimpers support during the previous home game against Scunthorpe United a fortnight ago.

But the on loan Charlton Athletic striker has now turned jeers into cheers by rediscovering his form in front of goal.

“I want to continue to prove people wrong,” said Pigott, 21.

“The fans were giving me a lot of stick only a few weeks ago but since then I’ve managed to get a few goals and want to keep it going now because there’s definitely more to come from me.”

Pigott’s latest effort came midway through the second half when he bundled home a low, left wing cross from Anthony Wordsworth.

And the youngster was delighted to get back onto the score-sheet at Roots Hall.

“I hadn’t scored at Roots Hall for a while so it’s nice to get off the mark,” said Pigott.

“I think my previous goals here were against Cheltenham which was in February so it was great to score again.

“But most important of all was the fact it got us the three points and we’ve won four of our last five league games now so things are up picking up well.”

However, it was not just the goal and the victory which pleased Pigott as he was also boosted by his improved forward play.

“I have been thinking a lot more about my hold up play,” said the striker.

“I think my hold play could’ve been better and today I thought it was so I was pleased about that.

“It’s been a good day and I think this is probably the best game I’ve played in at Roots Hall since I’ve been at the club.”

Pigott will now be aiming for more of the same against Barnsley next weekend.

But the forward could well have been going into the game with another brace after being denied by the woodwork in the first half.

“It was a bit of a crazy one,” said Pigott.

“I think it must have hit about three of their players and then hit the post.

“But I thought we posed them a lot of problems up front and now we want to do the same against Barnsley.”
