THE father of Southend United goalkeeper Ted Smith has spoken of his relief at having the talented teenager back home from France.
The Shrimpers shot-stopper travelled to Brittany with the England under-20 team and was in France on Friday evening when terrorist attacks in Paris killed 128 people.
The tragic events led to England’s youngsters having the second match of a double-header against France called off.
And Terry Smith told the Echo he was delighted his son Ted was now back in Benfleet.
“When the news first started to break we were obviously very worried,” said Terry.
“Ted was four hours away from Paris but you never know what might happen next and where else might be affected.
“What’s happened is terrible and our hearts go out to everyone over there but the FA were fantastic.
“They brought the squad back on Saturday afternoon and we’re very relieved Ted is back home safe and well.”
