TYRONE Barnett fired Southend United to a 3-0 win against Coventry City on Saturday – then immediately set his sights on securing promotion.

Barnett’s brace moved ninth placed Blues to within two points of the play-offs.

And Barnett believes the Shrimpers are now well set to push for a top six finish.

“Lots of teams seem to get back to back promotions so why can’t we?” said the on loan Shrewsbury Town striker.

“We have a good set of lads, good management and good staff so that’s what we’re aiming for and if we keep playing like this then we will have a chance too.”

Barnett has now bagged three goals in three games for Blues and his latest efforts also ended a four match winless streak for Phil Brown’s side.

But the Shrimpers were forced to dig deep to get back on track after midfielder Gary Deegan was dismissed in the 51st minute after being shown a second yellow card.

And Barnett was full of praise for Southend’s fighting spirit.

“It was difficult going down to 10 men but we all pulled together,” said the 30-year-old.

“We worked hard and forced them into having to take long shots in the end.

“We were able to break away but we had a game plan we stuck to and scored at the right times too.

“We put them on the back foot and it was a really good result.”

Barnett’s first goal came just six minutes after Jack Payne had put Blues in front.

However, he was surprised to be able to add a second from the penalty spot.

“When we first got the penalty I wasn’t interested at all because I thought there must already be a penalty taker,” said Barnett.

“But the lads called me to take it and it was my first one for about five years so it was great to see it go in.”

The two goals also extended Barnett’s bright start to his spell with Blues.

And he is glad to have rediscovered his enjoyment for the game.

“I’m buzzing on the pitch again,” said Barnett.

“It’s paying off too because I’m scoring goals.”
