SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is hopeful man of the moment Jack Payne will sign a new contract with the Shrimpers before tomorrow’s clash at Blackpool.

Payne’s current deal expires at the end of the season.

But Brown believes the attacking midfielder is now close to committing his future to the club.

“We’ve had three or four meetings now with Jack’s agent and I’m hoping we will be able to get it over the line before the game tomorrow,” said the Southend boss.

“I know it’s something (chief executive) Steve Kavanagh has been working exceptionally hard to get done but if it doesn’t happen before the game tomorrow then hopefully it will be the Fleetwood one the following weekend.”

Payne, who came through the youth system at Roots Hall, has taken centre stage for the Shrimpers in recent weeks, scoring three goals in his last four games.

The 21-year-old produced an impressive man of the match display in front of the Sky Sports cameras against Sheffield United on Wednesday night and now leads Blues’ scoring charts with eight goals this season.

But the youngster also suffered an injury towards the end of the 3-1 win against the Blades and is doubtful for tomorrow’s game with Blackpool.

“Jack picked up a slight knock and was in quite a bit of discomfort after the match,” said Brown.

“It was a dead leg he suffered and I would say he’s slightly doubtful for the game.

“We obviously hope he’s available because he’s in a great form and we saw on Wednesday what a little magician he is with the ball.

“He’s equalled his goals tally from last season now and I’m sure he’ll be looking to improve on that even further.”

Payne’s fine display against the Blades helped Blues move up to eighth in the League One table, six points below the play-off positions.

And the youngster is desperate for Southend to secure another three points tomorrow in what he believes is a hugely significant clash.

“It’s hard to describe just how big this game is,” said Payne.

“It’s massive and like a cup final really.

“Blackpool are fighting down towards the bottom and it’s a really big game for both teams.

“But hopefully we can get another three points we won’t stop believing about the play-offs until it’s mathematically impossible.

“We have a great bunch of boys here and there’s no reason why we can’t do it.”

Payne is keen to help that happen and will not become distracted by contract negotiations.

“I just focus on my football and making sure I play well,” he said.

“I leave everything else to other people and all I’m thinking about is the games we have left.”
