SOUTHEND United’s assistant manager Graham Coughlan has warned the Shrimpers squad they still have plenty to play for this season.

Blues sit 13th in the League One standings and can no longer finish the campaign in the play-off positions.

But Coughlan believes the players still have to prove whether or not they should remain at Roots Hall for next season.

“People are playing for their futures and for contracts here,” said the Irishman.

“At this moment we’re mid-table so the lads won’t really have convinced the gaffer.

“He will quite easily leave one or two behind if he feels they aren’t up to the job so they need to make an impression and Saturday is no different.

“You’re judged every time you take to the field and you want to make an impression.”

However, Coughlan does not believe Blues are far away from being able to enjoy a more successful campaign next season.

“There’s a little bit to be sorted out but I don’t think we’re far away,” said the 41-year-old.

“We’ve done OK this season but OK isn’t good enough.

“Had we have been more consistent we could have been higher and that’s the aim for next season when we want to up there challenging.”
