SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown expects to miss out on the signing of Glen Rea.

The centre-back, who can also play in midfield, made 16 appearances while on loan at Roots Hall last season.

But Brown believes Rea will now opt against coming back to the Shrimpers.

“I’m not holding out much hope where Glen is concerned I’m afraid,” said Brown.

“He was unlucky during his loan spell here as international call-ups and a couple of knocks stopped him having a real run in the team and I think that could be going against us.

“I’ve had a text from him before he went on holiday and I think he will go somewhere he feels he is more likely to play.

“I would have thought a player would have chosen to play at the highest level possible but Glen is entitled to do what he wants and I’m not completely closing the door on that one.

“It’s probably unlikely to happen and, while you never know what can happen, we’re obviously looking at other players we can bring in.”

Rea is available on a free transfer after being released by Brighton & Hove Albion.

However Luton Town – who the 21-year-old ended last season with on loan – are now favourites to sign him.
