ANTHONY Wordsworth is looking to help wrestle Southend United up the League One standings.

The attacking midfielder’s fine recent form has helped the Shrimpers move out of the relegation zone and up to 15th in the table.

And Wordsworth - who has scored five goals in seven games - is keen to keep the momentum going in order to continue his new celebration in honour of former WWF star Ric Flair.

“I was mucking around in training on Friday and started celebrating the way Ric Flair used to walk when he was doing his wrestling back in the day,” said Wordsworth.

“When I was a kid he was my favourite wrestler and that walk is also my signature dance move on a night out.

“I said I would do it if I scored at MK Dons on Saturday but after I raced the whole length of the pitch after the first goal I forgot to do it and was probably too worn out anyway.

“But after the second one I made sure I did it and I think it could be here to stay now.

“I just hope I can keep on scoring for it to happen and we can keep on picking up the victories.”

After a disappointing start to the season, Blues have started to fight back by picking up seven points from the last nine on offer.

And Wordsworth was delighted to continue the recent upturn in form with a fine 3-0 win at MK Dons on Saturday which saw the midfielder bag a brace.

“The win at the weekend was very pleasing both as a team and for me individually,” said Wordsworth.

“I thought we all played really well and it was great to get a win away from home like that.

“I was happy to get two more goals and to make it five in seven which is something that surprises me because I already feel like I’ve played a whole season!”

Wordsworth’s next chance to impress will come this weekend when Blues host bottom of the table Shrewsbury Town at Roots Hall on Saturday.

But the midfielder knows the Shrimpers cannot take victory for granted this weekend.

“It’s important we don’t get carried away by the last few games and we certainly can’t afford to get complacent about anything,” said Wordsworth.

“Shrewsbury are a good side and they’ve just appointed a new manager as well which can often result in teams suddenly picking up one or two results.

“We have to be wary of that but we’re feeling good and our home form has been excellent just recently so we want to keep that going by getting another three points to move even higher up the table.”

Shrewsbury have confirmed the appointment of former Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst as their new manager in place of Micky Mellon who left to take control of Tranmere Rovers at the start of the month.

Saturday’s game will also see former Shrimpers midfielder Gary Deegan back at Roots Hall.

Deegan made 53 appearance for Blues before leaving last summer.
