SOUTHEND United legend Freddy Eastwood has revealed his match-winning strike against Manchester United still gives him goosebumps.

Ten years ago today, Eastwood, who grew up supporting the Red Devils, curled home a fantastic free-kick to hand the Shrimpers a 1-0 win against the Red Devils at Roots Hall.

And it is a goal which Eastwood admits to still regularly watching.

“To be honest I don’t really watch many of the goals I scored but I do often play that one back and my kids are always watching it on YouTube too,” said Eastwood.

“Whenever I watch it I still get goosebumps because it was just a great night and it was definitely the loudest I ever heard Roots Hall.

“The atmosphere was just incredible and everything about the night was brilliant.

“My main memory is obviously the goal but the whole team was superb.

“I watched the game back the other night and Jamal Campbell-Ryce was fantastic down the right hand side and Darryl Flahavan was amazing in goal as well.

“He made so many brilliant saves to stop Ronaldo scoring but the whole team played their part in what was definitely one of my favourite ever games, especially as I grew up supporting Man United.”

Eastwood’s 30 yard free-kick came in the 27th minute of the match at a packed Roots Hall.

But the striker very nearly let Steve Hammell take the shot.

“Stevie was on free-kicks at the time, he had a great left foot and it was probably more suited to a left footer so he was originally going to take it,” said Eastwood.

“But I just had a feeling I was going to score and that’s what I said to Stevie at the time.

“As soon as I hit the ball I knew it was going in and it was a great feeling.

“It’s my favourite goal I’ve ever scored along with the one at Swansea which got us promoted to the Championship. I just can’t believe it was 10 years ago.”

Eastwood still has Mikael Silvestre’s shirt from the night and will never forget facing the likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It was weird looking down the pitch and seeing Ronaldo and Rooney playing but it was really exciting too,” said Eastwood.

“I had Wes Brown and Silvestre marking me and it was great.

“It’s a night I will never forget and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels like that.”
