KEVIN Maher’s main memory of facing Manchester United is the moment he first discovered the strength of their starting line-up.

Maher skippered the Shrimpers to their League Cup success against the Red Devils back in 2006.

And as part of his responsibilities the midfielder attended the referee’s dressing room before the game where the two teams swap team-sheets.

“I remember going to see the referee before the game and not knowing what kind of team Man United were going to picking,” said Maher.

“We actually thought their big name players were going to be on the bench but they gave us the team-sheet and you’re looking down it seeing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

“It was brilliant to see though because you don’t ever think you’re going to get the chance to play against those kind of players.

“I think I’m right in saying they had 10 internationals in their team and for us to beat them was just unbelievable especially as we had players missing and others playing out of position.”

Maher was joined in midfield by centre-back Peter Clarke and loved every second of the occasion.

“I just remember there being such a buzz everywhere and there were just so many people as well,” said Maher.

“We weren’t in the best of form either but at the time maybe we didn’t realise how big the win actually was.

“It’s only when I look back now that I really realise how much of an achievement it was for us as a club.”
