SIMON Cox admitted firing Southend United into the League One play-off zone with a 3-0 win against AFC Wimbledon was the perfect way for him to celebrate Christmas.

Cox scored twice in the Boxing Day win which sent Phil Brown’s side up to sixth in the standings.

And the striker insisted it was the best way for him to enjoy the festive celebrations.

“The two goals and the three points are very nice and moving into the play-offs makes it a perfect Christmas,” said Cox, who was joined on the score-sheet by Will Atkinson.

“It’s a good feeling but we can’t let our standards or our work-rate drop if we’re going to stay there.

“This was a big game with Wimbledon being just below us in the table but we wanted to stay clear of them and put pressure on the teams above us which is what we did.

“It’s a good win and 11 games unbeaten is a really good achievement.”
