LUKE Amos is readying himself for the rollercoaster ride of League One football after sealing a loan switch to Southend United.

The 19-year-old midfielder will be with the Shrimpers for the remainder of the season after signing from Tottenham Hotspur.

And Amos now has his sights sets on securing more happy memories in Southend, where he would often visit in his youth.

“I used to come down to Southend to go to Adventure Island like everyone does so I knew a bit around the area before coming here,” said the highly rated youngster.

“It was a lot warmer than it is now when I used to come here but I’m delighted to have come in.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and Southend are flying in the league at the moment so as soon as I heard what was happening I wanted to get down here.

“It all happened quite quickly but I was delighted when I found out they wanted to sign me.”

Amos completed the loan switch in time to be on the bench for Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Fleetwood Town.

And he hopes his spell with the Shrimpers will enable him to develop his blossoming career.

“Coming here is going to be very different to playing in the under 23s but it’s a good challenge and I’m excited to learn from the older players here,” said Amos.

“I will learn through playing and through watching and it’s good to be in the environment of men’s football.

“You can pick up a lot and that’s something I want to do here.

“I want to learn and grow as a player but most of all I want to try and help the team push for the play-offs.

“Hopefully I can get some games and enjoy the whole experience.”

Amos has represented England at under 18 level and was on the bench for Tottenham’s first team for their EFL Cup clash at Liverpool in October 2016.

The youngster has been with Spurs since the age of nine and sought words of wisdom from the Southend born Cameron Carter-Vickers before making the switch to Blues.

“There are some Southend based boys at Tottenham and Cam was filling me in with what he knew about the club before I came down,” said Amos.

“I’ve been with Spurs 10 years now so I’m due a testimonial!

“I’ve seen a lot in that time and there have been a lot of boys who have come and gone during those years.

“I’m obviously happy to have made it this far but I’m still not where I want to be.

“I have to keep working hard every day to push and that’s what I’ll be doing at Southend.”

During his five month stint with the Shrimpers, Amos will also be working with manager Phil Brown.

And the midfielder revealed the Blues boss was another big factor in him wanting to come to the club.

“Everyone knows about Phil Brown, he’s worked in the Premier League with Hull City and he’s doing a good job with Southend now too,” said Amos.

“That’s certainly another plus point because I’m at a good club with a good manager and, from what I’ve seen already, there are definitely good players here as well.”

Amos will now be keen to add something extra to the Shrimpers side and will be pushing to make his debut in this weekend’s clash against table-topping Scunthorpe United at Roots Hall.

But when the youngster does make his way onto the pitch, he hopes his style of play will be able to make a big impression.

“I have a lot of energy,” said Amos, who is based in Hertfordshire.

“I do a lot of running and like to made a lot of tackles.

“I like to get stuck in and do the dirty midfield work.”

Amos will be eager to show those attributes while with the Shrimpers.

And Brown is looking forward to working with the 19-year-old.

“I’ve watched Luke four or five times this season and when Spurs rang us to say he was available I jumped at the chance of bringing him in,” said Brown.

“He’s technically good, has great energy and also gets in the face of the opposition.

“He also has a great attitude which was shown by how he was cleaning up the dressing room after Saturday’s game and how he came down to Southend to do his warm up after helping Spurs’ under 23 beat Southampton on Monday night.”

Brown went to watch the game but knows Amos has a fight on his hands to break into his team.

“Our midfield is a hard one to get into right now but I hope to be able to give Luke opportunities here,” said Brown.
