SOUTHEND United’s youth team player of the year Elvis Bwomono has been delighted by another season of progress - but will not be resting on his laurels.

The 18-year-old right-back has consistently shone for the Shrimpers this term.

But he remains eager to improve.

“This season has been great but I’ll keep working hard and remain professional on and off the pitch to get to where I want to be,” said Bwomono.

“Next year I’ll be looking to do well in the under 21s and to try and get in and around the first team.

“I know it’s a big aim but I would love to make my debut next season and I’ll be giving my all in everything I do to try and impress the right person in a bid to make that happen.”

Bwomono’s displays will have certainly caught the eye this season.

And the defender, who skippers the Shrimpers’ youngsters, is happy with how things have gone.

“I think it’s been a good season for us,” said the right-back.

“From November onwards we seemed to step things up and we’ve done well.

“I’ve enjoyed being captain and for me personally it’s been a good season.

“I think I’ve played in pretty much every game for the under 18s and I’ve been involved in quite a few for the under 21s which has been pleasing because it was something I was aiming for at the start of the season.”

Bwomono’s displays also saw him named the youth team’s player of the season.

And the teenager was delighted to have been chosen.

“I see football as a team sport and I’m more focused on the results we get more than anything else but it was a nice touch to get the award,” said Bwomono.

“We’ve had a lot of good players in the team this year so I was happy to win but I need to build on this now and do even better next season.”

Bwomono will again be looking to shine and his displays have also earned praise from youth coach Dave Huzzey.

“Our strength and conditioning coach Jay Collison said the other day that Elvis has completed the youth team and he’s right,” said Huzzey.

“He’s exceptional in the gym but more importantly he’s been exceptional on the pitch too.”
