SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has stepped up his pursuit of Michael Kightly.
The Basildon born 31-year-old, who was with the Shrimpers at the start of his career, has held talks with Brown about returning to Roots Hall.
And the Blues boss insists he is doing all he can to bring Kightly back to the club.
“I’ve held talks with Michael and he’s making noises about wanting to come back to the area which is his home,” said Brown.
“We’ve moved the deal closer but he has a couple of big offers from elsewhere which we’re competing against.
“We’re doing all we can and someone of his quality and experience would be a great signing.”
Kightly is available on a free transfer after being released by Burnley.
