SOUTHEND United winger Michael Kightly believes taunts from Blackburn Rovers’ travelling fans will help him shine on his return to Roots Hall this weekend.

The Basildon-born Kightly spent three years with Blackburn’s arch enemies Burnley before leaving Turf Moor earlier this summer.

But the 31-year-old is actually hoping to be singled out for abuse from the away supporters.

“Having been with Burnley I’m sure I’ll probably get a little bit of stick but I like getting that stick because it spurs me on,” said Kightly.

“I would honestly rather they do it than not give me any stick at all.”

But Kightly is also hoping it will be the Shrimpers supporters making more noise on Saturday as Phil Brown’s side look to start the new League One season in style.

And the winger cannot wait to line up in what is certain to be a competitive clash.

“I’m pleased pre-season is over and I’m looking forward to the start of the season now,” said Kightly.

“Pre-season is often a frustrating time because you’re not feeling good every day.

“You feel tired at times because you’re working hard and can go into the friendlies feeling lethargic because of that.

“But it’s what you need to get ready and we’re all in good shape because of that.”

Despite that though, Kightly is still expecting a tricky opening day test against a Blackburn team who were relegated from the Championship last season and have been made favourites to finish top of the table this term.

“Blackburn are probably the best team on paper in the league so it will be a tough game,” said Kightly.

“But hopefully we can make it a tough game for them and get a good result.”

Blues just missed out on a top six finish last season and will be keen to avoid similar heartache this time around.

Kightly is also keen to help make that happen and he remains confident of Phil Brown’s side being among those pushing for promotion.

“I’ve had three promotions in my career and I want to get a fourth now,” said Kightly.

“I want to help the team pick up as many points as possible this season and hopefully together we can achieve something great.

“It will be tough because there are a lot of top sides in this division this year but in training I’ve seen how much quality we have too so I’m looking forward to the season starting.”

And Kightly - who also started his career with Blues - is enjoying being back in familiar surroundings.

“I’ve settled in well and it’s nice coming to a new club and not having to rely on my sat nav for once,” added the winger.
