SOUTHEND United defender John White was left suffering a familiar feeling of frustration following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic.

For the second time in the space of six months, White’s goal was not enough to stop the Shrimpers suffering a setback at the Valley.

And the 31-year-old was disappointed his latest effort was not enough to stop the Addicks coming out on top.

“It’s frustrating that both times I’ve scored here it’s not counted for anything because we’ve lost the game 2-1,” said White.

“We’re extremely disappointed because we started strongly and were well in the game.

“We had some good chances to go ahead and if we had taken one of those it could have been a different story but, unfortunately, it didn’t go our way.”

Charlton stamped their authority on the game with two goals in the space of four second half minutes.

And White was annoyed with how Blues reacted to going behind.

“In effect, it’s cost us the game,” said White, who again lined up at centre-back.

“We needed to be solid and not let them do what they did, which was kill off the game.

“We got one back but it cost us big time and we couldn’t quite get that one chance we needed for another goal.”

White’s effort - which was his first since scoring at Charlton in April - came in the 78th minute when he headed home a right wing corner from Stephen McLaughlin.

And the defender was delighted to see the ball hit the back of the net.

“I had been making that run the whole game but this time the ball came into my area and it was great to see it go in,” said White.

“The ball was delivered in such a way that the pace was already on it and the goal gave us the emphasis to cause them problems towards the end.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the second but we have another chance on Tuesday (against Shrewsbury) to go and put things right.”

And White looks set to head into the clash against the Shrews in good shape having returned to action without suffering a reaction to the groin injury which forced him to miss the 0-0 draw with Rochdale.

“I managed to get through the game, so I’m happy with that,” said White.

“I was annoyed to miss the last game but things like that happen and you have to be sensible, especially when you get to my age.

“I’m just pleased to have got through it and I feel good.”
