SOUTHEND United’s Jason Demetriou has been selected in the Cyprus squad for their forthcoming friendly against Montenegro.

Demetriou will fly out to meet up with the squad on Sunday.

And the right-back cannot wait to team up with his country even though the clash will force him to miss next Saturday’s League One match with Rotherham United.

“I always really enjoy playing for Cyprus so I can’t wait to get back out there with them,” said Demetriou, who is Blues’ top scorer with eight goals so far this season.

“Of course it’s a shame to be missing a match with Southend, especially when things are going so well.

“It’s a big season for us with the way the seedings are now so it’s an important game and one I couldn’t miss.”

Cyprus' match with Montenegro takes place next Friday.

And Demetriou could soon be joined in the Cyprus squad by his Shrimpers team-mate Harry Kyprianou.

The defender - who has made 11 appearances for Blues so far this season - has now acquired Cypriot citizenship and is available for both the senior squad and the under 21s.

However, the youngster has yet to discover if he has received a call-up this time around.
