SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell believes staying with the Shrimpers would be best for Dru Yearwood.

The 18-year-old midfielder - who has started the last nine games for Blues - has already caught the attention of a number of clubs with his fine form.

But Powell feels first team football will be the best way for Yearwood to continue his development.

“Playing a season of League One football is better than playing a season for an under-23 team,” said Powell.

“I want him to be with us for a long time but a player like him will catch the eye.

"The last thing he needs to do is go somewhere where he wouldn’t play because that wouldn’t be right for his development or education.

"He needs to be playing and he’ll do that here.”

Yearwood has made 19 appearances for the Shrimpers so far this season.
