CHRIS Powell wants his Southend side to go this distance this season - just like he will be aiming to achieve in the London Marathon.

Powell will be tackling the 26.2 mile course across the capital in mid-April to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

But, with less than a month to go until the big day, the Blues boss is starting to feel quite anxious.

“As the marathon is getting closer I’m getting more nervous about it,” said Powell.

“But I’ve been an ambassador for Prostate Cancer for many years now and I wanted to contribute.

“I’ve been to many events and learnt a lot about the disease.

“One in four black men will get it and that really took me back.

“I felt like I had to do something and that’s how it came around.

“I know there’s a cycle ride but I don’t like cycling on the roads and I had always been a runner.

“I’ve quickly realised I’m not what I used to be but I’ve got on with it and I’m contributing.”

Powell will be the third Blues manager in the past 12 years to run the London Marathon, following in the footsteps of Steve Tilson and Phil Brown.

And finding the time to train has proved problematic for Powell since he was appointed Shrimpers boss at the end of January.

“Finding the time to train has been really hard but I don’t beat myself up if I miss a day or two because I know I’ve done quite a bit,” said Powell.

“I’ve done a lot of running along Southend sea front and I ran in Blackpool last weekend when it was about minus eight but it had to be done.”

But Powell has also found the training to be hugely beneficial.

“It’s a stress-buster and I would recommend all managers do it,” said Powell. “I couldn’t really see Sam Allardyce or many of the managers on the weighty side doing it. Sorry Sam!

“I’ve found it good for me in terms of fitness and mindfulness. It’s helped me and I will continue to run after the marathon, just maybe not as far!”
