PETER Gilbert was thrilled to end an eight-year-long goal drought to help Southend United see off Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at Roots Hall on Saturday.

The Blues left-back headed home a Ryan Hall corner against his former side 10 minutes from time.

And he was stunned to see the ball hit the back of the net, 199 games after his last goal.

“I guess you could say I was probably due a goal so it was great to see it go in,” said Gilbert, 28.

“It’s a set piece we had been practising and one which saw Barry Corr get a few goals towards the end of last season.

“Mark Phillips has done it a few times this year too but it was my turn this time and I’m really pleased, if slightly surprised, to score.”

Gilbert’s header followed a Liam Dickinson penalty and saw Southend surge up to sixth in the League Two standings.

But Blues were forced to improve after the break after failing to impress in the opening 45 minutes against the bottom-of-the-table Pilgrims.

“The first half wasn’t pleasant and Plymouth really did frustrate us so the management had a few things to address at half-time,” said Gilbert.

“We hung in there though and in the end we got the rewards so we have to be pleased because it’s another three points and another clean sheet too.”
