JOHN Spicer wants to kick start Southend United’s season with a win at Northampton Town tomorrow.

Blues have beaten in their first three matches of the new campaign.

But that does not concern Spicer and the midfielder is adamant Paul Sturrock’s side will soon start to surge up the League Two table.

“I wouldn’t read too much into losing the first two games as you can lose back-to-back games at anytime in the season,” said Spicer.

“Our luck for the first couple of games hasn’t been the best the best either but hopefully we’ll get a win tomorrow, kick start our season and we can go on a little run.

“Northampton will be tough and I do expect them to be up there this season, but I think we will be as well so I do feel we will get something there.”

Spicer again looks set to line up in central midfielder after sealing a free transfer switch to Blues just before the start of the season.

And, after he made his first start for Southend at Oxford United on Tuesday night, the former Arsenal trainee feels he is now getting closer to his best.

“The more you play the sharper you feel and it was good to get 90 minutes on Tuesday,” said Spicer.

“My thigh injury which also stopped me playing for a while in pre-season is now sorted out too so I’m feeling good.”

Spicer wants that to continue against the Cobblers and he will again be lining up in a long sleeved shirt whatever the temperature.

“I had to pick my shirt for the season and because I’ve got a metal plate in my arm I chose a long sleeve one,” said Spicer.

“I broke my arm when I was younger and when it gets to winter time the plate in my arm gets cold and quite numb.

“It’s almost hanging off so that’s why I need the long sleeves.

“People often ask if it’s a fashion choice or a superstition but the truth is it’s neither of them.”

Blues will be out midfielder Michael Timlin this weekend as he serves a one match ban following his red card at Oxford. Winger Kevan Hurst (ankle) is also a doubt and a late check will be made on Freddy Eastwood (calf) after he returned to full training on Thursday.
