SOUTHEND United’s loan move for a midfielder has been delayed after he picked up a slight injury.

Blues had been hoping to complete a deal for the player, who is currently on the books of another League Two club, later this week.

But boss Paul Sturrock has revealed they will now have to wait to complete the deal.

“I’ve identified the player that I want but he’s picked up a slight knock and will be out for five or six days, so we will have to wait a bit longer to sort things out,” said Sturrock.

“We have irons in the fire and we have taken a real look at three or four players in midfield positions.

“However, there’s one who I think can really do a job for us and it’s not a serious injury he’s picked up, so I’m prepared to hang on a bit for him.”

Sturrock will therefore have to continue with the players currently at his disposal for Saturday’s trip to Morecambe.

But midfielder John Spicer will be back in the squad after completing a three-match suspension.

The 29-year-old was dismissed for a poorly-timed tackle during the 1-0 defeat against Burton Albion.

However, Sturrock is pleased to have him back.

“It’s good to have another player available again, but I’m not going to be changing the team too much from last Saturday’s game at Rotherham,” said Sturrock.

“I thought that was a very good performance and result, and the players who played that afternoon did a very good job.”

Ryan Leonard, Kevan Hurst and Michael Timlin all occupied central midfield positions during the 3-0 win against the Millers as Blues lined up in a 4-5-1 formation.

Sturrock is now contemplating doing the same against Morecambe and could also have defender Mark Phillips back in contention after recovering from a groin problem.

“Mark returned to training earlier this week but we will have to wait and see how he is and if he’s suffered any reaction,” said Sturrock.

“Luke Prosser is also improving with his injury but I think Saturday’s game may come too soon for him.”
