RYMAN ONE NORTH: Tom Ranger is gunning for a repeat performance when Great Wakering Rovers visit Waltham Abbey tomorrow.

The midfield sensation made his debut for the club against the Abbotts last September having joined from Hullbridge Sports, and scored Rovers’ only goal in a 1-1 draw at Burroughs Park.

And the 21-year-old is now aiming to make it another day to remember, but he wants the three points this time around.

“I made my debut for the club against Waltham Abbey and it was a good day for me,” he said. “I got the goal but we only drew the game and it was a game we should have won.

“But we have come a long way since then and that has been reflected in our results since Christmas.”

Rovers went unbeaten in December but have only won one of the last six games, although Ranger has fond memories of that day – scoring a hat-trick against Burnham Ramblers.

In fact, Ranger has scored 11 times already this season, which is three times as many as he managed in his last season for Sports.

The Hullbridge-based midfielder had been with Sports from the age of five but said when Rovers came calling it was a move he knew he had to make.

“It has been a great move for me,” said Ranger. “It was a big decision when it came but it has definitely proved out to be the right one.

“Hullbridge did a lot for me. The guys over there made me the player I am but I feel I have definitely kicked on since arriving here. I am in a slightly more advanced role and the results have been good.

“It is only natural you strive to be better when you are surrounding by better players in a bigger league but I am pleased with how far I have come.”

Ranger was full of praise for Rovers manager Dan Trenkel, who has pushed him into a more offensive role this term, with the results clear for all to see.

“A lot of my progress is down to Trenks. He saw me when we played in the FA Vase last year (a game Hullbridge won 1-0) and I know he wanted me then.

“But I am here now and since he asked me to play further forward I feel a much better player for it.”

l Wakering are 15 points clear of the relegation places ahead of the encounter.

But following struggling Cray Wanderers’ recent upturn in form, Trenkel is keep to put as much distance between the bottom two and his side.

Rovers will be without captain Lewis Sparrow and Stuart Hepburn (suspended).

However, Nick Skelton is back in contention following six weeks out with a hernia injury.
