ROB Small says Jason Maher has already proved himself a valuable asset to Bowers & Pitsea, after he was named as assistant manager.

Maher has replaced former assistant Mark Hunter, who has had to step down because of increased work commitments.

Hunter, who is an academy coach and scout at West Ham United, will still be involved with Bowers’ youth set-up, but Small feels the addition of Maher, who has been working behind the scenes at the Essex Senior League club so far this season, will be a positive one.

“He’s someone I’ve known a long time,” said Small. “We actually worked together when I started out in Sunday league and Jason is one of the most enthusiastic people you will come across in football.

“He adds another dimension to the management team and I'm really happy to have him on board working with Harry Wayne and myself.” Maher played for Essex Senior League side Burnham Ramblers in 2007 before a serious leg break ended his career.

He took over management of the reserve team before becoming first-team manager at Long Melford in Suffolk, leading them to a cup final.

He then spent two-and-a-half years at Saffron Walden, helping them to promotion, and has been helping in an unofficial capacity at Bowers this season.

And Small said that work has proved crucial, and hopes the new management team will continue to thrive.

“The work he has done for me scouting FA Vase opposition this season has been invaluable,” said Small. “Everyone brings something different to the table and we have a good balance. I’m really lucky to have these guys. Hopefully as a team we can get the best out of our players and bring success to the club.”
