EAST Thurrock United manager John Coventry has heaped praise on duo Sam Higgins and Tom Wraight after they were named in the Ryman Premier Team of the Year.

Higgins and Wraight were named in the team of the year along with a host of other star names, following an excellent season which saw Rocks secure promotion to the National League South via the play-offs.

Striker Higgins scored more goals than anyone else in non-league football across the country last term, hitting 45 in 44 appearances.

Wraight was another key man, scoring 22 from wide positions in his first season at Rookery Hill.

And Coventry said their inclusion in the team was justified, while he was keen to stress it was more than just the pair that contributed to a historic season.

“Higgo and Wraighty were excellent for us last year,” he said. “Sam Higgins’ stats speak for themselves and I think it is taken for granted as he scores so many goals year after year but it truly is remarkable. There are not many players like him.

“As for Tom Wraight, we knew exactly what we were getting when we brought him in from Witham and he has delivered in a big way.

“We knew he had bundles of ability but he has shown it in his first season and I am very grateful for that.

“Personally I think Lewis Smith would have been included if he hasn’t received the ban and it is important we don’t forget his contribution.

“But what is also important is their love for the game. They enjoy football and that is what it is all about. Both boys would tell you this is a team effort and they are right. Every single player has been important, and they made the team what it was.”

And Wraight added it was a great way to cap a memorable year.

“It feels great and is also an excellent way to end such a good season,” said the winger. “I obviously had a look at the team when it got announced and the other players were all very impressive when we played against them.

“When Covo signed me I knew I'd fit in and I am glad we could achieve promotion in my first season at the club. It was a great season from start to finish.”
