JAKE Robinson has his eyes on another cup triumph after continuing to break records at Billericay Town.

The 31-year-old striker’s two goals in the 5-3 victory against Staines Town on Monday took him onto 52 for the season, meaning he surpassed the previous record held by Leon Gutzmore set in 1997/98.

Robinson, who was signed last March in a deal worth £24,000, has been a roaring success in the colours of Billericay blue and he will be determined to net his 60th goal for the club in the Isthmian League Cup final tonight.

Town take on Metropolitan Police at Aveley’s Parkside bidding to defend the title they won last term.

And a delighted Robinson is determined to add the title to the Essex Senior Cup crown won last month.

“The goal record has been mentioned a lot since about November but back then it felt a long way away,” said Robinson, who replaced the injured Ricky Modeste on 57 minutes against Staines. “I didn’t want to make it hard for myself but focusing on it and the last seven weeks have been hard so it has been difficult to get going again.

“It was great to get the goals in such an important game. One I got the first I was determined to get the second otherwise I would feel like a batsman on 99 not out.

“And I heard from Leon as well. He sent me a very nice tweet to congratulate me on the record. I know how highly regarded he is and it is nice to hear words from someone like that.”

Matt Paine, Billy Bricknell and Modeste were also on target against Staines, with Town extending their advantage to five points at the Isthmian Premier League summit (at the time of press).

And Robinson said he was grateful for a rest ahead of tonight’s cup final, as he bids for another winner’s medal.

“I have started a lot and recently I did feel tired so credit to (coaches) Harry (Wheeler) and Danny (Hazle) for giving me some time to rest,” he said. “I felt better for it.

“I was sat there in the first half and we were playing pretty well. Staines had their chances and they are a fantastic attacking team.

“But in the second half it felt like the Billericay of old. The challenge on Ricky spurred us into life.

“It is so much better having the points on the board. Now the pressure is on Dulwich Hamlet.

“We are in a cup final and we want to win, as any team does in a final,” he added. “We need to keep that momentum going and we are confident. We want to give the fans a good night out and continue to create memories.”
