BIRMINGHAM City manager Alex McLeish has confirmed he intends to extend West Ham United's midfielder Nigel Quashie’s loan by a month.

Quashie, whose short-term loan expires at midnight on Friday, has been attempting to prove himself to McLeish over the last month after coming through a successful trial period.

The former West Bromwich Albion player has already expressed his desire to stay at St Andrew’s permanently and, should the Hammers agree, the Scotland man will remain in the Midlands for a further four weeks.

“We are renewing that (Quashie’s loan deal) so we will be looking to get that tied up,” admitted the Birmingham manager.

“We’ll be looking at another month again to take it as it comes and get Nigel to a level to make a good contribution, he did that last weekend (against Charlton Athletic) apart from his sending-off.”

Quashie has made four appearances since making his Blues debut in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on October 21.

The 30-year-old played just eight league and cup games for the Irons following his arrival at the Boleyn Ground for £1.5million in January 2007.

He missed the entire 2007/08 season through a troublesome foot injury suffered in the 4-3 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in March 2007.
