IT has been another busy week for the men’s section at Rochford as they held both the monthly Saturday & Sunday medals.

The Saturday saw Thomas Wells shoot a fine 70-5=65 as he secured a two-shot victory in the top division and a new playing handicap of four.

Wells recovered from an early dropped shot as three birdies put him at two under at the turn as he played some excellent golf.

He carried on the back nine like he finished the front as he played the next six holes in one under par.

Wells then tried to undo all the hard work as back to back sixes brought him back to the field, but he then showed his true form again as a finishing birdie secured the win from Stephen Fearn (72-5=67).

Fearn played consistently on the front as he posted seven pars, and it wasn’t until the back nine that his round really come to life as he scored three threes in a row around Rochford’s amen corner and followed that with a super birdie down the par four 17th as he made giant strides into Well’s lead but just came up short.

Eleven handicapper Eric Stanley won the second tier with 78-11=67 as he posted three birdies in denying Paul Kicks (76-8=68). The day’s best net score went to division three player Paul Nippard with 80-15=65 as he enjoyed a comfortable three-shot winning margin and a two shot handicap reduction.

The Sunday medal saw closer finishes in all divisions as Tony Hadley with 73-3=70 earned a one shot victory from Lloyd Wright in the top section.

Hadley’s round had contrasting nines as his front opened with back to back bogeys but recovered well enough as he then put together seven pars on the bounce.

Three birdies in four holes propelled him to the front and even a double bogey finish didn’t stop him denying Wright (75-4=71), who scored three birdies and nine pars in an overall consistent display.

The second division went to Richard Leigh with 81-12=69 as he just denied four golfers who all shot net 70 with Steve Smyth (78-8=70) gaining the runners up spot on countback.

It went to the third tier to again shoot the day’s best nest score as 15-handicapper Geoff Holyland posted 81-15=66 as the top three earned handicap cuts to all now be playing off 13.

The midweek Scott Spencer saw an incredible 12 players gain handicap cuts as they enjoyed the playing conditions with the highlight going to Leslie Banks who scored 43 points on his way to a two point winning margin.

Last but not least, the Ladies Silver team carried on their fine recent form as they gained a vital 5-2 win at home against league rivals Braintree to give themselves a chance to win their section as they prepare to meet Channels later this week.
