RICHARD McEvoy has started his make or break tournament at the Hong Kong Open in encouraging fashion.

The Southend professional says he needs to finish in the top three of the tournament to keep his European Tour card for next season.

And he goes into today’s second round in a good position, three shots off the lead on three-under par in joint 12th place at the Fanling Golf Club.

McEvoy, a professional at Thorpe Hall Club, said: “The course suits my game because its not a long course and position off the tee is very important.

“And the most important part of my first day was the solid golf I played which really pleased me. Hopefully it has laid a strong foundation for the week.”

Basildon’s Daniel Brooks, who looks to be safe in the top 110 places in the Race to Dubai rankings – which will ensure he keeps his card for next year – is one-over par in a tie for 75th place. Brooks is in 102nd place in the rankings and making the cut today will make 100 per cent sure he retains his card.
