ON the hottest day of the year so far, 24 ladies took to the fairways of Basildon Golf Club hoping for a victory on Lady Captain’s Day.

Although some very good scores were recorded, Jen Frizzell took first place with a superb 39 points which earned her a handicap cut to 22.

She was closely followed by Julia Castle who played one under her handicap with 37 points, just beating Vi Madle on countback with the same score.

Back in June, the mid week monthly medal was a closely contested competition with Daphne Saitch taking the honours by just pipping Josie Wilby with a nett 75 — by having a better back nine. Pam Gray was hot on their heels with 76.

The ladies in the silver team beat Benton Hall 4-1 at home.

With many of the matches only being won on the last two holes, the competition was closely. Sue Cable, Shirley Clayton, Judy Long and mother and daughter Jackie and Hannah Worthington had high hopes of a good win as they started their match.

Hannah was all square in her match as she headed for the par five 16th hole, and after two amazing shots, found herself on the green with an eagle putt for the win.

Although she did not make the eagle, the eight inch birdie putt was conceded for the hole.

She then went on to win the 17th hole with a par to close out the match.

The silver team then travelled away to Clacton-on-Sea where they notched up another win, this time beating the opponents 3 and 2 in very windy conditions.

In the UK Championship of England qualifier, Cable came first with a nett 73, playing two over her handicap, while Angie Smith came in with a nett 74 and Daphne Saitch following close behind with a nett 76.

As the silver division winner, Cable will now attend the final at Abbotsley Golf Club alongside Jen Frizzell who qualified with a nett 78 from the bronze division.

In the ladies coronation foursomes competition, June Grayer and her partner of the day, Vi Madle, came in with a very impressive 37 points in this difficult format, with Julia Castle and Yvonne clow taking second place with 33 points. Olive Bell and Judy Long scored 31 points.

Sadly for Grayer and Madle, they are unable to make the regional finals which are being held at Romford Golf Club this year, so Clow and Castle will go through as the next best recorded score.

Although the season has been a mixed one for the bronze team, they ended on a high as they beat Belfairs 5-2.

There were some great wins for the new-towners with Pam Gray winning her match 8 and 6, while Jen Frizzell won hers 6 and 4.

Josie Wilby also had a good 3 and 2 win while Julia Castle, who had a great match, finally lost on the 20th hole.

Both June Grayer, playing for the first time in many years, and Maureen Parkin, having taken a days leave to play, both had superb wins on the 18th to secure the win for Basildon. Despite the bogey competition not being too popular, the Jean Pitts saw Cable take the winners spot with an amazing +5, (5 under her handicap) earning her a one shot reduction, while Pam Gray played one under her handicap to come in with +1.

She too has reduced her handicap and now plays off 18. Chris Ives came third with -2.
