BRADLEY Smith is taking a well-earned break before the Radical European Masters champion decides his next move in motorsport.

The Billericay driver claimed the sports car title after a dominant weekend in Spain which saw him secure four pole positions, two race wins and a fastest lap.

That was enough to see him hold off the challenge of title rival Tristan Viidas at the Circuit de Barcelona to make it a hat-trick of championships in the last three years.

“It’s great to have added Radical European Masters champion to the list,” said Mike Smith, boss of Billericay-based Mectech Motorsport and Bradley’s dad.

“Apart from having to work to four in the morning changing a clutch, the whole weekend went according to plan.

“It was the perfect end to the season and it all came together at the right time for us.

“It took a while for us to get our heads around the car and you can’t exactly just pop over to Barcelona for testing.

“We’re now planning to have a bit of break and look at the options for Bradley next season.”

Smith went into the final four-race round at Barcelona with an eight-point lead over his Estonian rival Viidas, who was driving for Speed Factory Racing on their home track.

The Essex driver quickly extended that to 12 points after bagging four pole positions after being quickest in qualifying.

But his total dominance in the previous round at Monza in Italy meant Smith had time penalties for the first two races when it came to his pit stops in Spain.

Despite starting on pole for both races, Smith’s prolonged time in the pits handed Viidas the advantage and he duly secured two wins.

But 23-year-old Smith showed his skill by carving his way through the traffic to bag a brace of second places, even surviving being T-boned on the first corner of the opening race.

However, he had no penalties for Sunday’s second pair of races and duly secured two wins.

Smith set as fastest lap of 1:45.662 in the third race on his way to victory, while Viidas was fourth, 15 seconds adrift of his title rival.

The Mectech driver concluded the season with another win, finishing 15 seconds ahead of Tony Wells and James Littlejohn.

Viidas suffered a suspension failure which ended his race but saw him classified 15th, two laps down on Smith.

“Bradley destroyed them in qualifying and on the whole, we couldn’t have asked for anything more from the weekend,” added team principal Mike Smith.

And regarding Viidas’ mechanical problems in the last race, Smith added: “It would have been nice to have kept it on track but they (Speed Factory Racing) did make it an interesting weekend.”

The Radical European Masters title came after Smith won the Radical SR3 Challenge in 2013 and the Radical Clubman’s Cup in 2012.
