LEE Chapel Primary School got the better of Vange in a tense penalty shoot-out to win a community schools five-a-side football tournament.

Children from years three and four took part in the tournament at Basildon United’s TLM Stadium last Thursday.

Run by Active Soccer, the tournament hosted youngsters from Janet Duke Primary School, Vange Primary School, Kingswood Junior School and Lee Chapel Primary School, with the latter entering two sides in the free event.

Following the group stages and semi-finals, Lee Chapel One and Vange faced off in the final, with the winner only coming after a penalty shoot-out.

Rik Moran, who helped organise the event, said: “The final was a closely contested battle with each team having several chances to score. The crowd really got behind the teams, which finished 0-0 at full time and went into extra-time, before going to a penalty shoot out.

After five successful spot-kicks, the match went into sudden death and Lee Chapel took the win.

Each player in the tournament received a certificate from Active Soccer for taking part, with the runners-up also receiving medals.

Lee Chapel students all received medals and a trophy.
