SOUTH Essex Gymnastic Club’s Max Whitlock and Brinn Bevan will have medals on their minds when they compete in World Championship team final in Glasgow tonight.

Britain’s place in this evening’s showdown has confirmed their spot in next summer’s Olympic Games in Rio.

But coach Scott Hann insists the gymnasts are now keen to push on and are ready to take risks in order to work their way onto the rostrum.

“Max and Brinn are both delighted to have reached the final, just like all the team are, but that’s just part one done really,” said Hann.

“Making the Olympics was the focus of these championships but now the team have decided on a slightly different strategy to try and win a medal in this final.

“We will be putting out some big start scores and taking some risks to try and win a medal because if you’re going to finish in fourth then you may as well finish eighth.”

Britain totalled 354.417 to qualify in third place for the final behind both Japan and China.

And Hann, who coaches Bevan and Whitlock in Basildon, believes both gymnasts are ready to make their mark in the final.

“It’s been a massive experience for Brinn,” said Hann on the Thundersley based youngster.

“He’s had some ups and downs so far but he’s happy and he’s raring to go.

“Max is also in very good shape. He’s fit and ready and hopefully that can lead to some good results.”

Whitlock has also qualified in ninth place for the all around final with 88.365 points and will be lining up in both the pommel horse and floor finals.

Bevan, who is competing in his first ever senior World Championships, missed out on any individual finals and finished 49th in the rankings, scoring 83.764 points.

His South Essex Gymnastic Club team-mate Reiss Beckford finished in 80th place after scoring 81.798 points on his Jamaican debut.

“Reiss did very well and he’s qualified for the test event for Rio,” said Hann.

“He made a couple of mistakes but it was his first major event since 2010 so it was a really big thing for him and he handled it well.”
