SOUTH Essex Gymnastics Club chairman Roy Short has revealed they are on the look-out for additional premises to meet the extraordinary demand for new members.

Just a week on from the club’s Max Whitlock and Brinn Bevan shining for Great Britain at the World Championships in Glasgow, Short has confirmed he is keen to secure more venues.

And he hopes that will allow the Basildon based club to shorten their two-year waiting list.

“Unfortunately during the peak time our facilities are at capacity so we’re actively looking for some additional premises so we can expand the club’s operation,” said Short.

“We’re hoping to sort it out for the new year because there’s an incredibly long waiting list at the moment.

“It’s nearly two years and it means that new born children have their names put down for the pre-school class which starts when they’re three.”

Short travelled to Scotland to watch Whitlock win pommel horse gold and two silvers.

Bevan was also part of the Great Britain team that finished second while Reiss Beckford made his international debut for Jamaica.

And Short believes their achievements will also lead to more budding gymnasts wanting to join the club.

“After the 2012 Olympics when Max was part of Team GB we had an enormous response and reaction towards the club,” said Short.

“It roughly doubled at that time and I’m sure there will be a swell of interest this time too.

“But I’m immensely proud of all three of them and the club as a whole.

“I was in Glasgow watching and was part of the noise in the Hydro, it was just incredible.”

South Essex Gymnastics Club’s head coach Scott Hann was also proud of the performances in Glasgow.

But he is also keen to keep the club moving forward and has welcomed the possible addition of new venues.

“We’ve been looking for quite some time, we’ve spoken to a few different places but things seem to be coming to fruition now which is good news,” said Hann.

“We hope it can happen in the near future because we want to keep moving things on.”

And that plan will also see the club enhance their own backroom team.

“We’re looking at the next set of coaches that I can develop to bring through the next set of gymnasts,” said Hann.

“We’ve already got lots of youngsters in national squads and teams so things are looking bright.

“Glasgow was fantastic and I’m so proud of them all but we want to keep on building on the success.”
