LEE Watson and sidecar driver Ben Holland bagged a podium finish at Snetterton 300 but dropped to fourth in the British Formula One Sidecar championship.

Sidecar passenger Watson, who lives in Rayleigh, and his Portsmouth-based Hannafin team-mate Holland had enjoyed a strong weekend last time out at Knockhill winning all three races.

That moved them up to second in the standings but a retirement in the first race on the Snetterton cost them dearly as they dropped two places to fourth, despite at third place in the second race.

“It’s great to be on the podium again,” said a delighted Watson.

“It was just a shame we had the mechanical problem in the first race.”

Watson and Holland qualified in third for the first race but were forced to retire on the ninth lap, three from the chequered flag.

The pair fixed their Kawasaki machine for Sunday’s race and moved their way through the field from the ninth row of the grid to finish third behind reigning champions Ricky Stevens and Ryan Charlwood and the winners multiple World champions Tim Reeves and Gregory Cluze. The next round is at Thruxton in two weeks’ time.

Standings: 1st Stevens/Charlwood 128 points, 2nd Reeves/Cluze 125, 3rd Walker/Hawes 111, 4th Holland/Watson 99.
