CONCORD Rangers’ bid to win the Essex Senior Cup for an unprecedented fourth time in a row was brought to an end by rivals Chelmsford City, as they ran out 3-1 winners tonight.

The Beach Boys hadn’t lost in the competition since February 2013, having won in the last three seasons, but the Clarets took the honours in this third round encounter.

Concord had fallen behind after just three minutes in what was a fast-packed opening to the tie. Marvin Ekpiteta failed to clear and Billy Bricknell pounced to slam the ball past the goalkeeper.

Former Beach Boys midfielder Max Cornhill drilled wide as the pressure grew, but with 13 minutes on the clock the scores were level.

Rob Girdlestone did brilliantly to send the ball into the box and Steve Cawley flicked delightfully into the corner.

Cornhill did find the target against his former club five minutes later as he made the most of more hesitant defending and that was how it stayed until half-time.

Chelmsford had come close to extending that lead as Girdlestone cleared off the line.

The second-half saw both sides exchange chances but the next goal was always going to be critical and it went the way of the visitors.

Adam Bailey-Dennis, another former Concord man, saw his shot blocked on the line and Josh Rees diverted home from close range.

And that was how it ended, as Concord’s long unbeaten run in the competition came to an end.

Essex Senior League outfit Basildon United progressed at the expense of Great Wakering Rovers, as the Bees upset the side a division above them.

Rovers played more than an hour with an extra man as well, following Joe Gilbert’s early red card and the away side missed several golden chances to forge ahead.

But Basildon took the lead with a thunderbolt moments into the second-half. Hamid Zamani crashed a long-range drive into the net and it was another fine goal that doubled the advantage.

John-Joe Slater made it 2-0 in style and Reece Tranter made it 3-0 in what was becoming a hugely comprehensive result.

Rovers pulled a goal back but it ended 3-1.

Hullbridge Sports battled bravely but were beaten 4-1 in the end by League Two outfit Colchester United.

It started so well for the hosts, as Harry Skinner drove home from the edge of the penalty area to put Sports ahead after seven minutes.

But the U’s hit straight back through Charley Edge before Sports needed goalkeeper Charlie Aldiss to come to their rescue on more than one occasion.

Dion Sembie-Ferris made it 2-1 to Colchester seconds before half-time and George Brown added a third six minutes after the interval.

Edge got his second on the final whistle as the match ended 4-1.

East Thurrock ran out 3-0 winners against AFC Hornchurch as they progressed with ease.

A strong Rocks side went ahead after just eight minutes, with Sam Higgins powering home and Joe Gardner doubled the advantage 15 minutes later.

Higgins added a second on the hour mark and that was how it stayed.

In the Ryman Premier League, Canvey Island responded to manager Danny Heale’s stinging criticism with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Lowestoft Town.

Omarr Lawson scored the only goal of the first half, as the Gulls looked to hit back after their 6-0 mauling at the weekend.

George Sykes doubled the lead midway through the second-half and grabbed a third on the stroke of full-time in what was a hugely impressive response.
