WITH newly-crowned European and International champions in their ranks, Phoenix Karate Club has enjoyed its most successful year to date.

Karate will officially become an Olympic event at Tokyo 2020 and, as a result, the sport’s popularity has increased.

And with the growing popularity, Phoenix’s success has increased.

Phoenix chief instructor Cheri Stokes, who is a fifth dan, said: “We are seeing that karate is becoming more and more popular as we move closer to 2020, where karate will be an Olympic sport for the first time in Tokyo.

“And as we are placed very well to support any child who wants to compete for their country one day, there are lots more competitions that opened up to the children to improve and refine their chosen event, which is either kata or kumite.

“We also offer traditional karate classes for adults and those not wanting to compete.

“In our last competition of 2017, we were placed in the number one slot for highest amount of trophies for the entire competition.”

Mia Balmer and Trae Gulutu were crowned kata regional champions, with Gulutu narrowly beating fellow Phoenix student Alex Badacian, who was forced to settle for the runners-up position.

Gulutu also obtained a silver medal in kumite.

Chloe Barsby came second in kata, while Lacey Dunmore and Jaimee Leigh Beadle placed second and third respectively in the younger category.

However, Beadle took top spot in kumite.

Dunmore, along with brother Liam, came third in kumite.

Amie Corbyn, Cameron Daykin and Iris Tonnison also won medals in their respective events.

Five-year-old Iris followed up her silver medal in kata with a bronze in kumite.

In kumite, eight-year-old Morgan Jerden continued his impressive form by winning another competition. His six-year-old brother Fletcher placed second.

Mai Pulham, 15, who recently obtained his black belt, also won his contest along with younger sister Kathleen, 13.

Stokes, who puts the club’s impressive year down to the vast amounts of commitment being shown by the members, was full of praise for Calum Corbyn.

Stokes added: “Calum won his first ever competition medal in kumite.

“We are so proud of his achievement and improvement.”
