FIT-AGAIN Tom Ashton wants to get Southend Saxons firing again when they host high-flying Taunton Titans at Warners Bridge tomorrow.

The Saxons are now third from bottom in the National Two South standings after suffering three defeats in their last four games.

But the former Rochford Hundred fly-half, who has now recovered from a calf strain, is certain Southend will soon work their way back up the table.

And he hopes to help them secure a shock win against the third placed Taunton this weekend.

“Every game is important for us now, especially at home so it’s another big match for us tomorrow,” said Ashton.

“We have seen in glimpses what we can achieve if everybody sticks to their roles and we all pull in the same direction when it comes to our attacking and defensive systems.

“With that in mind, I am still confident we can move up the table.”

Ashton is also keen to help make that happen having worked his way back to full fitness.

The 31-year-old tore his calf muscle in the first couple of minutes of the 30-26 defeat to Cambridge and missed the next two matches before returning against Canterbury last weekend.

Ashton came off the bench during the 31-10 reverse in Kent but is glad to be back playing and could well be back in the starting line up against Taunton.

“I hate watching from the sidelines and being injured is the most frustrating thing for any sportsman so I’m really pleased to be back again,” said Ashton.

“I have had no reaction from my injury after playing 20 minutes at the weekend so I’m really pleased about that.

“Before I got injured I felt as though I was in the best form I have had in a Southend shirt and I want to get back to that now to try and help the team get some wins.”

But for that to happen, Ashton knows Saxons must improve on their below par showing at Canterbury.

“Last weekend was very frustrating and we didn't play to the structures that were set out during the week,” said Ashton.

“We never really got into the game, our skill set wasn't good enough with many errors being made and we will need to play much better if we are going to beat Taunton.”
