IAIN Meads is keen for Southend Saxons to keep on springing surprises in National Two South this season.

Saxons saw off Chinnor 40-24 in the first game of the new campaign last weekend.

And Meads, who scored two tries in the convincing triumph, is now seeking more of the same at Redruth tomorrow.

“I don’t think many people would have thought we would win against Chinnor like that and we want to keep that going now,” said the 22-year-old full-back.

“We really played well but it’s going to be another tough game tomorrow, especially after such a long journey down there.

“We haven't won down there for quite a few seasons now so it will be good to break the trend.

“Redruth are also going to be confident after their big win on the opening weekend but it would be great to get another win to surprise a few more people.”

Meads is also keen to help make that happen by continuing his own try scoring form.

The speedy full-back touched down twice against Chinnor.

And, in doing so, Meads doubled the number of tries he managed to score in the whole of last season.

“It was really good to get two tries in my first game as I have already beaten my tally from the entire last season,” said Meads.

“I'm feeling good and pre season was a good confident booster for me and the rest of the players.

“We’re playing a more expansive game this season which is definitely going to suit my game.

“Hopefully there will be more tries and more exciting games for the spectators because we want Southend to finishing much higher up in the table than last year.

“We have the quality in the team to be in the top half of the table and, on a personal note, I would like to be one of the top try scorers for Southend and in the whole league.”

Southend will again be without Daniel Legge and Kris Chesney this weekend while captain Mark Billings is also unavailable.

In his absence, Harry Hudson looks set to skipper the side while Mitch Bennett is likely to start.

And Southend’s director of rugby Chris Green is keen to build on the fine start to the season.

“We want to keep it going and we need to approach it as just another game on another rugby pitch,” said Green.

“We don’t want to get caught up in how we’ve got on there in the past and we just need to focus on playing our own game.

“We can worry about our previous results there afterwards.”
