WESTCLIFF’S first team manager Rick Compton was left angered by his side’s shocking end to the game in Saturday’s 46-25 defeat at Westcombe Park.

Westcliff were in front with 20 minutes of the National Three London & SE match remaining.

But the Kent club ran riot in the closing stages to condemn Westcliff to a second successive defeat, much to the disappointment of Compton.

“The end of the game was hugely disappointing,” said Compton.

“We led at 20, 40 and 60 minutes but were blown away in 15 final minutes that frankly were embarrassing.

“Full marks to Westcombe Park for taking their opportunity but we have to be honest about how we handed them that opportunity.

“We were handicapped by early injuries and fitness issues but the lads are playing now at a level where they know the margins between success and failure are minimal.

“In this game, we let those levels dip and paid a heavy price.

“We need to be looking closely at why that happened ahead of the visit of Shelford next weekend.”

Westcombe Park went in front after just eight minutes with a converted try before Chris Dudman kicked a penalty to reduce the home-side’s lead to 7-3.

Moments later, Westcliff skipper Buster Reynolds touched down to put the visitors in front but the home-side soon regained the lead with a try of their own.

However, as the topsy, turvy nature of the game continued Conor O’Brien bagged a try to ensure Westcliff led 13-12 at half-time.

After the break, they extended their advantage with a try from Tom Boughtwood but two well taken penalties from Westcombe Park soon levelled the scores at 18-18.

Westcliff hit back with a try from Ross Merrick which Jack Jones converted but the home-side hit back to run riot in the closing stages scoring 28 unanswered points in the final 15 minutes.
