SOUTHEND Saxons’ latest signing Ian Morrison will be out to teach their National Two South rivals a lesson this season.

The 23-year-old flanker relocated to south-east Essex to take up a job at Wickford’s Bromfords School.

And that switch also led to him teaming up with the Saxons, who travel to Canterbury tomorrow.

“Moving here I wanted to carry on my rugby so I got in touch with the club and it all went from there really,” said Morrison, who works as a PE teacher.

“I went along to training and played my first game against Old Albanians last weekend which I really enjoyed.

“I thought we showed really good character to come back into it to get the draw and hopefully we can build on that now to get an even better result against Canterbury at the weekend.”

Morrison had been playing for Bury St Edmunds, who were promoted from National Three London & SE last season.

And he has already noticed a step up in the standard of play.

“The tempo of the game is a lot quicker but it’s a good challenge and I’m looking forward to it,” said Morrison.

“It’s been a good start to the season for the team, especially as the games have been against some of the top sides at this level.

“Hopefully we can keep on doing well and can get another good result against Canterbury.

“I don’t know too much about them if I’m honest but they’ve made a good start and I’m expecting a difficult game.”

Canterbury have won all three of their matches so far this season and are currently third in the standings.

Southend sit ninth having already recorded a win, a draw and a defeat this term but the Saxons will be without veteran back row Kris Chesney this weekend after he aggravated an Achilles problem in training.

However, both flanker James Needham and number eight Daniel Legge could be back in contention for the short trip to Kent.
