SOUTHEND Saxons starlet George Griffiths is gunning for more glory at Wimbledon today.

The 17-year-old winger scored his first National League Three London & SE try in last weekend’s crucial win against rock-bottom Amersham & Chiltern.

And the Seevic College student is now seeking more of the same against Wimbledon.

“We’ll be going into this game full of confidence after the result we got last weekend,” said Griffiths.

“It was a strong, hard game against Amersham and by winning it we feel as though we’ve set the ball rolling again.

“Hopefully we can keep the momentum going this weekend now.

"We know Wimbledon will be tough to beat because of where they are in the league but we’re looking forward to the test.”

Wimbledon are currently second in the table, just a point behind table-topping Tonbridge Juddian.

But Griffiths will be heading into the clash on a huge high after scoring a cleverly crafted try last weekend.

“It was very pleasing to get the try,” said the youngster.

“It was great to get a win again too and get back to winning and after the past few games.

“I think it’s what the team needed to do, especially with the new set up with coaches.

“I think it was great to get the win with all the change and think it was great Danny Cleare got a win in his first game as coach.

“He deserves it with all the good work he has done with Seevic and Southend but we want to be able to carry that on now.”

Southend, who are 11th in the table, ended a run of six successive defeats by beating Amersham.

Griffiths played a key part by scoring touching down in the second half and would now love to be able to add to his tally.

“It was an amazing feeling getting my first try for Southend firsts,” recalled Griffiths.

“Earlier on in the game I messed up a good chance to score a try so I wanted to make up for it by scoring another one which it what I was able to do it.

“It would be nice to get another try but the main thing is to help the team play well and get another good result.

“We want to try and get a run of good results going now and move higher up the table.”

And, as Griffiths helps to make that happen, he is also feeling more at home in senior rugby.

“I feel very comfortable in the first team as everyone has be so nice and supportive and helpful towards me,” said the teenager.

“Straight after I messed my early chance no-one jumped on my back and put me down.

"They all helped me and encouraged me to get back up and keep going.”
