SOUTHEND Saxons will continue their bid to beat the drop when they head to Hertford in National Three London & SE tomorrow.

Southend seemed destined for relegation after suffering a 10 point deduction from the RFU for failing to control their players against Colchester.

However, five wins in six games have seen the Saxons move out of the bottom three and up to 11th in the standings.

And centre Chris Vaughan is keen to keep the good run going against their fourth placed hosts this weekend.

“I’m sure it’s going to be a tough game against Hertford because they’re having a good season but we’re going there in good form ourselves,” said Vaughan.

“We will have to give it everything if we want to beat them but if we keep the same attitude that we have had over the last few weeks it’s definitely possible.

“The last few games have been great and everyone is playing for each other at the moment.

“There is a real good buzz in the side and we have beaten some good sides in the last few weeks which has given us all a real lift at an important time.

“But, despite that, I still don’t think we have been playing to our full potential and that’s exciting.”

Southend’s winning run has taken them two points above relegation rivals Chichester with just three games to go.

However, the Saxons have a far more difficult run in as they face three of the top four in their remaining matches.

The first of those clashes comes this weekend.

But Vaughan insists Southend could not be heading into the game in better shape.

“Everyone is feeling really positive right now and confidence is high in the team,” said Vaughan.

“There is just a good vibe in the side and we’re looking forward to games.”

Vaughan is still also looking for his first try of the season.

But the influential centre is only interested in making sure the team triumph this weekend.

“Unfortunately I just haven’t been in the right place at the right time so far this season,” said Vaughan.

“Of course it would be nice to score this weekend.

“But I’m not too bothered as long as we get the win because that’s obviously the most important thing.”

Southend’s first team coach Danny Cleare is expected to select from a similar squad this weekend as the Saxons look to secure a shock win.

Hertford have also won five of their last six games and are currently locked level on 79 points with third placed Westcome Park who Southend welcome to Warners Bridge next weekend in another key clash as they look to avoid dropping into London One North.
